Hot Cocoa Bombs Away! What a Freaking Mess This Was!

These cocoa bombs have been everywhere as of lately and we had to know what the craze is really about.  You have seen those videos, tutorials that show beautifully crafted chocolate bombs of marshmallows masterpieces with cocoa with sprinkles or decorations.  It’s fun… and easy they say! They are delicious they say, well our team gave it a run for the money and things bombed, literally.

After researching several different methods, we purchased the melting chocolates, decorations and cocoa mix and mix-in extras and molds.  Shout out to local K & B Candy Supply Company (http://www.kbcandy.com/) for having everything needed at affordable prices.

We tested out both metal and silicone molds and had mixed results.

The metal molds quickly transferred the heat from the melted chocolates thru the metal and made the mold too hot to hold in your hand.  This only seemed to happen when melting the chocolate on a double boiler.  We would recommend just microwaving the chocolate as it does stay melted long enough to get the mold coated and in the refrigerator.  Also, the metal molds seemed to crack the chocolate easily when we would tap on the mold to release the chocolate dome.   Our chocolate domes were uneven and brittle with very uneven edges which impede joining both sides. We recommend giving the chocolate coating at least 2 layers with refrigeration in between, maybe even 3 coats to ensure a nice even dome.

The silicon molds worked better when it came to releasing the chocolate formed dome.

When adding decorations to the outside of your bombs, you will need to freeze the bombs well before attempting to drizzle any other melted chocolate on it.  Melted chocolate applied to room temperature chocolate will just melt a hole in the side of your bomb.  We also found this trick out the hard way!

If I had to rate this on actual taste of the cocoa, it pretty much tasted like it came straight out of the packet and was not worth the cost or the mess we made trying to make these.   They do look very pretty if you can manage to get some of the molds to come out even. I think the only thing that could save this project would be to add booze! Straight into the mug if necessary! Sorry, but this trend had us frustrated with not-so-rewarding results.
